From Kannemeyers African Alphabet to Activist Mapping

While reading two of my favourite blogs today I came across a strange congruency of activism in Africa.
These are both strangely diverse subjects and blogs and show two sides of the same map so to speak. I have a particular interest in the map of Africa. Mostly because Johannesburg, the wonderful cosmopolitan city that it is, is evidence of its fluid borders. Johannesburg unfortunately however is suffering a spree of xenophobic attacks affecting the spill over of foriegn nationals that have taken refuge in the city. Another reason is because of my own project, on which I’m not allowed to go into to much detail yet, with a Google Maps API which address the lives and life styles of foreign nationals in Yeoville, Johannesburg.
Back to the point, here is a great article and conference feedback from the ‘White African’ blog that looks at using Web 2.0 mapping applications for activism in Africa. The other article I’d like to bring you attention to is a review of South African artist Anton Kannemeyer’s current exhibition at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York by Regime on the ‘We Make Money Not Art’ , strangely tagged under ‘democracy’.
