Animation lecturer returns to Serbia

October 3rd, 2012 by christo

Popular Digital Arts animation lecturer, Mileta Postic, left the department at the end of September to return to Serbia.  In his two and half years in Digital Arts, Mileta brought an inspiring passion for the art of animation to his classes.  The results have shown in the high standard of student work which has been achieved over the last two years.  Mileta also continued to develop the strong links between the animation programme at Wits Digital Arts and the South African animation industry though a series of master classes and internships.

As a tribute to his impact, the postgraduate (MA & PostGradDip) class created a farewell T-shirt design for Mileta.  The design features Mileta,  surrounded  by the 3D characters that the class  created under his supervision.

Jock of the Bushveld Seminar

May 31st, 2012 by christo

The release of Jock of the Bushveld  at the end of 2011 was, without question, a major step forward for animation in South Africa.  Not only was Jock the first full-length animated feature to come out of South Africa; but it was also released in stereoscopic 3D.  Although it received luke warm reviews from local critics, it attracted good audiences in South Africa and is currently being prepared for various international releases.

The year, the postgraduate Animation Studies seminar programme in Digital Arts concluded with a session that examined the Jock phenomenon from several different perspectives.  Local marketing  expert, Andy Rice, presented the very successful branding and merchandizing strategies that were applied to Jock; while Wits Digital Arts MA research student, Lucy Higgens, discussed the adaptation processes that the director/scriptwriter Duncan MacNeillie used when developing the animated film from his earlier (1986) live action version of the class tale.  Finally, the Technical Director of the Jock production,  Tiaan Franken, (an alumni of the Wits Animation programme) spoke about the numerous technical challenges that had to be overcome in the making of the feature film.  Tiaan also showed a clip from the the television series which the team is developing as the next stage of the production.

South African animation reaches a new stage

July 1st, 2008 by christo

Like many historic events, the meeting today between the DTI (Dept of Trade and Industry) and Animation industry representatives from Johannesburg, took place in a back room in rather unremarkable circumstances. The agenda items were also rather unremarkable, ranging from the verification of pay slips to the validation of contingency budgets; but the significance of the meeting was that the main government funding agency was, for the first time, seeking to recognise the distinctive production requirements of animated film so that it can be funded on the same basis as live-action film in South Africa.

What was also remarkable was the number of television series already in production and the number of projects, including a full-length feature, which are already in development. Clockwork Zoo, from Cape Town, revealed that they are producing an episode a week, in their  26 part  2D television series for SABC, Urbo – the adventures of Pax Afrika.  Anamazing Workshop have already produced and aired a series of 13 x 5 minute short films in 3D; while DepthFX are busy with a long form development called Tanks.  Both Cape Town and Johannesburg committed to pushing three projects each through the new DTI funding schedule before the end of 2008.  Things are looking up for  the animation industry in South Africa.
